About Me

I'm Matt Lancaster

I am a landscape photographer who explores his curiosity for phenomena and processes of the natural world through abstract imagery.

Born into the nomadic life of a military family in California, I credit my childlike curiosity about the phenomena and processes of the natural world that drive my career as a landscape photographer to a childhood exploring rocky coastlines, playing under forest canopies, collecting rocks and sticks, swimming in lakes, and fishing in streams in which nature nurtured my budding environmental ethic.

When I grew up, degrees in landscape architecture from University of Oregon and geology from Portland State University provided the creative and intellectual foundations for my lifelong integration of creativity, science, nature, and culture that now I pursue daily.

Among my achievements as a photographer, I have been most proud of my association with land conservation organizations such as Sierra Club, Wilderness Society, and Colorado Coalition of Land Trusts, who have worked to set aside land for future generations, wildlife habitat, and healthy ecosystems by using my images of some of my most cherished and wild landscapes in their fundraising campaigns.

My most personal and imaginative images have shown in solo and group exhibitions in Colorado’s distinguished galleries and venues, such as Denver Performing Arts Complex in Denver, R Gallery in Boulder, and Lincoln Center for the Arts in Ft. Collins.

Art consultants have appreciated my professionalism and broad portfolio of images for clients such as Lockheed Martin, Valley Bank and Trust, and Exempla St. Joseph Hospital. Commercial clients such as the States of Colorado and Wyoming and Denver Post have used photos from a few of my favorite road trips to promote travel throughout the western United States, and a photo from Great Sand Dunes National Park has even graced an album cover by Colorado musician Janet Feder.

From my home in Boulder, Colorado, I still recall the travels of my youth fondly and frequently seek my local mountains, streams, and forests and destinations around the world to further explore the natural elements my curiosity discovers.

My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stands behind the quality and value of my products.

Techniques

Since 2016 my camera of choice is a digital Nikon 35mm SLR and a variety of Nikon lenses. My present camera body is a Nikon D810. My favorite lens is my 70-300mm, which enables me to zoom in and crop out all distracting elements.

My digital darkroom consists of Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop, in which I complete my vision following image capture. I process with as little digital manipulation as possible because I like to keep the process simple.

Matt Lancaster Art Community

Do you love art?

I love when people and art connect. And I want to facilitate, foster, and encourage those connections.

In 2021, I started an online community of art lovers called the Matt Lancaster Art Community to enable people to bring art into their lives more readily, more often, more affordably, and just more.

The Community is based on connections - between art and people, people and places, and people with one another. Through a bi-monthly newsletter I share my fine art photographs, venues to view art, stories on the creative process, shows and exhibitions worth seeing, artists who I admire and appreciate, places I photograph, and more. The Community is a resource.

How do you become a member of the Community? By joining my email list - but there are no obligations as a member. However, you always receive the benefit of a 10% discount on your purchases of my art and products.

But there's more to the Matt Lancaster Art Community than just art.

Much more.

The Community also leverages the passion we feel for art to make a difference in the world that will outlive us. As a landscape photographer, geologist, landscape designer, and all-around outdoor guy who thinks there's no such thing as bad weather (only bad clothing), my own abiding connection to the natural world fosters a passion for protecting and preserving this remarkable Earth.

With my mission to conserve all available land in Colorado paired with my passion for art, I envision the Matt Lancaster Art Community as a group of like-minded champions for nature who want to make a difference in the natural world through land conservation advocacy and charitable contributions.

Members of the Matt Lancaster Art Community not only care about art but want their investment in my art to return to the natural world through measurable land conservation achievements.

To realize this, I create campaigns for selling photographs that generate significant donations to land conservation organizations. My photographs are symbols of the ecosystems my clients invest in when they purchase my art. My collectors see a direct connection between the Earthly elements in my photographs and the role investment plays in the conservation of landscapes.

So, do you love art? Then join the Matt Lancaster Art Community! You'll start receiving my bi-monthly newsletter Connections in your inbox.

Do you love the natural world and want to help it thrive? Then join the Matt Lancaster Art Community and stay tuned for opportunities to make a difference.

For now, please take a moment and send this page to a friend. The greater the Community, the greater the impact.

Thank you for your trust!
