This photograph is one of a triptych of focusing my lens vertically at rocks in a pond to capture their distortion from the small ripples on the surface of the water. The water is dynamic so each image is different than the next.
As I observed the water, I noticed how the ripples changed with the direction and intensity of the wind. Using a shutter speed of 1/4000 second, I made images when the water was calm but also while ripples moved quickly across the surface.
Sometimes the ripples were relatively uniform in size and shape and produced uniform patterns from edge to edge in images. At other times the ripples varied or were compressed by the leading edge of a wind gust - producing small ripples between larger ones, a phenomenon called compression and rarefaction. Such was the case with this image.
If possible, zoom in to see the distortion close up. It's fascinating!
