On this particular afternoon, I hurriedly grabbed my camera and raced to a nearby nature preserve while a forest fire raged close by and smoke filled the air. I wanted to make atmospheric images in the smoke.
During a lull in the strange kaleidoscope of light, I approached some tall wetland reeds and grasses at the edge of a pond and began to experiment with intentional camera movement (ICM) - a common practice of mine with subjects that form strong parallel elements in the frame such as tree trunks, grasses, broad landscapes, cloud banks, streams, and such.
I initially set the aperture to f/25, set focus on the blades, set ISO to 100, then moved the camera up or down roughly parallel with the blades as my camera snapped off photos at shutter speeds ranging from 1/13 sec to 1/3 sec before changing the aperture to f14 and making more images. This image is one of only a few in which the temperature of the light was relatively normal; most of the images occurred during some high temperature light that caused an orange cast.
And that's when I returned to photographing the landscape in the eerie smoke.
